I paced up and down in the garden shed behind the house. This was the only place on the property I could find to make myself scarce while I thought through this cracked plan of mine.

So I made up my mind to seduce Viktor. Now he threw a spanner in it by offering to take me back to town. I didn’t want to take him up on that. I didn’t want him handing me over to his own man or anyone else related to his evil empire.

That left leaving on my own, and he sure as hell wouldn’t lend me his car to drive away in. I had to come up with a way to steal it and that meant putting him off his game. I had to throw him off my trail so he wouldn’t be watching me.

Why in the name of fucking Hell did I come up with the idea to seduce him? I was a doctor, for Christ’s sake! I didn’t need to use my body like some sort of tramp.

A secret corner of my psyche wanted to fuck him, just once. I could justify it saying I had to, that I needed to manipulate him somehow to get away from him. I would never give myself permission to do something so low in any other circumstances.

Just for a second, I let myself accept the fact that I could have ended up with him. If none of this ever happened, if the other gang had never attacked his house and sent him and Maria into hiding, if he had never kidnapped me to save his daughter’s life, we might have gotten closer. I would have kept working on Maria’s case. We would have seen more of each other at the hospital. He might have gotten up the courage to ask me out. Things might have developed between us.

He might have been the one man on the planet I could have had a future with. Now that was over. If I seduced him, that would be all gone if it wasn’t already. I would be able to experience the body under that suit of his. I would find out what his tattoos looked like, but any chance of a future would evaporate—not that I could have a future with someone who kidnapped me.

I couldn’t think about that. I couldn’t trust him. If he handed me over to his man, I would be in just as much danger as I was with him. I would be in his custody. I had to get as far away from him as possible and that meant using his body. That was my only advantage so I had to use it.

So what was I doing in this shed? If I wanted to seduce him, I should have been inside with him. I couldn’t. I couldn’t face him. He knew. When I touched his knee, he knew. He knew when I sat down on the couch next to him. He knew when I looked up at him from the chair.
